Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Employment for Women
Renton, WA

WANTO 6th Year Grant—Awarded September 1999

Given the construction boom in Puget Sound area of Washington, Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Employment for Women (ANEW) will provide technical assistance to employers and labor unions to create an entry-level employment pool for the construction industry. Working with employers and apprenticeship committees, ANEW will identify existing entry trades-related jobs and potential pre-apprenticeship occupations; match opening to apprenticeship applicants on waiting lists, other women who lack one or more of the requirements for apprenticeship, and TANF recipients, to assist employers and labor unions to place and support women in entry-level construction positions immediately paying $8.00 to $11.50 per hour that will also lead to apprenticeship and/or experience to move up the nontraditional occupational career ladder.

ANEW has 19 years of experience in working with employers and unions to promote the entry and retention of women in apprenticeship and other nontraditional occupations. Apprentice and Nontraditional Employment for Women is a member of WOW's National Workforce Network

Scheduled project completion date: December 2000.
