The Women’s Employment Program (WEP) at Century Housing Corporation conducted a WANTO project that included a variety of activities to increase the participation of women in apprenticeship and other nontraditional occupations, in order to provided onsite technical assistance to 15 employers, five labor unions and 14 apprenticeship programs in or near the Los Angeles Empowerment Zone (EZ).
With these employers and labor unions, Century anticipated that 150 women from the EZ area would make the transition from welfare to long-term work, offering good pay and benefits. Century bases their expectations for success are supported on their experience implementing the district court’s mandate to increase the participation of tradeswomen on the I-105 Century Freeway highway and housing construction project.
