WANTO GranteesNontraditional Employment for Women
Nontraditional Employment for Women has received two WANTO grants. Please click the grant year below to learn more about each project and its outcomes and products. WANTO 4th Year Grant—Awarded September 1997 WANTO 6th Year Grant—Awarded September 1999 WANTO 4th Year Grant—Awarded September 1997 Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) provided on-site and off-site technical assistance employers and labor unions, particularly those in the telecommunications, utilities and high-technology in the health industries, including the placement and retention of low-income women in blue-collar and high-tech employment and apprenticeship, involving more than 35 employers and unions and 150 women.
WANTO 6th Year Grant—Awarded September 1999 Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) will provide technical assistance to four unions, three construction companies, one empowerment zone, and one enterprise community. In addition, NEW will develop an advisory board "NEW Long Island" to bring services to women, unions, and employers in two counties of Long Island; establish a process for tradeswomen and new entrants in the industry to access construction management jobs; create a tracking system to follow access to training, support services, placement and promotions for forty WANTO women. NEW was founded in New York City in 1978; it is one of the oldest community-based organizations in the country that advocates for and trains women to work in nontraditional occupations. Nontraditional Employment for Women is a member of WOW's National Workforce Network. Scheduled project completion date: December 2000.
