Centro del Obrero Fronterizo for La Mujer Obrera
El Paso, TX

WANTO 6th Year Grant—Awarded September 1999

La Mujer Obrera, in collaboration with the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Wider Opportunities for Women, will provide technical assistance to 10 employers and labor unions in the construction industry. The partnership will develop a methodology to support/change management and employee attitudes toward the promotion of female workers in apprenticeship and other nontraditional jobs; promote systemic changes in participating employers' recruitment, hiring, training and of women in apprenticeship. The project will focus on expanding the opportunities for displaced women workers and other low-income women in El Paso County, especially those living or studying in El Paso's Federal Empowerment Zone.

La Mujer Obrera has provided services to low-income Spanish-speaking women workers, most recently to those displaced by NAFTA and the globalization of the economy for the past 18 years. These services have included developing strong working relationships with employers, unions, and government entities, including the formation of the Fashion Development Center to provide training and technical assistance to the garment industry.

Scheduled project completion date: December 2000.
