WANTO 5th Year Grant—Awarded September 1998

Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc., in collaboration with public and private partners, provided technical assistance to help 50 employers and labor unions make commitments to increase the participation and retention of women in apprenticeship and other nontraditional occupations. The collaboration focused on providing support services to lower-income women returning to work from welfare and residing in the Portland/Multnomah County Enterprise Community and Metro Portland region (that includes the inner city neighborhoods of North and Northeast Portland and downtown commercial core). The support services included a “Ready to Earn Fund” to allow some flexibility in services.

Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. anticipated placing 100 women in apprenticeship and nontraditional occupations in telecommunications, public utilities, transportation and the skilled construction building trades.

Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. was organized in 1989 by a small group of tradeswomen. Today, it is a statewide organization of 120 dues-paying tradeswomen. Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. is a member of WOW's National Workforce Network.

The grant has been extended to December 2000.
