WANTO 5th Year Grant—Awarded September 1998

STRIVE/East Harlem Employment Service, Inc. will provide technical assistance and ongoing support to 15 employers and labor unions, affecting 100 women in the New York City Empowerment Zone/Economic Communities who are returning to work from welfare.

The STRIVE program will focus on training and placing women in telecommunications, video technology, computer reparation, automotive/environmental technology, including the direct placement and pre-apprenticeship programs to sponsored apprenticeship.

STRIVE was established in 1986 to address the needs of the many population groups residing in the inner city, among whom are single parents, public assistance recipients and the working poor. The For Women Only initiative was recently developed to address the gender-specific needs of women participants of employment and training programs. It will form part of the intake assessment for employers and unions participating in STRIVE's WANTO project.

Scheduled project completion date: December 1999
