WANTO 1st Year Grant—Awarded September 1994
Workplace Solutions

Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW), Workplace Solutions Project carried out a national program of technical assistance directed at employers and unions to improve the workplace for women entering and working in nontraditional employment. The project:

  1. Developed, piloted, and adapted technical assistance for different settings (large urban, multi-state metro area, large state with urban and rural communities, and largely rural region);
  2. Created a standardized curriculum addressing a range of technical assistance needs of employers and unions, including in-service training for managers, line staff, union members and bargaining personnel on strategies for making the workplace more responsive to women in nontraditional jobs;
  3. Conducted on-site consultations;
  4. Created sample or model employer policy and procedures and a checklist to evaluate current policies related to the needs of women in nontraditional jobs;
  5. Developed recruitment, screening, and employment testing strategies;
  6. Created employee orientation and prep-skills program models;
  7. Organized on-site and off-site support groups and/or intact workgroup problem-solving; and
  8. Developed techniques for addressing differential facilities, equipment needs, and sexual harassment concerns, all to assist women in nontraditional jobs.

Outcomes

Technical Assistance
WOW's Workplace Solutions Project provided direct technical assistance to more than 50 employers and nine unions.

WANTO 2nd Year Grant—Awarded September 1995

Wider Opportunities for Women collaborated with the Home Builders Institute (HBI) to conducted the HBI's technical assistance program that focused on employers in the residential and light commercial construction industry and its widespread opportunities for women in nontraditional occupations.

WANTO 3rd Year Grant—Awarded September 1996
Workplace Solutions

Currently, Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW) is providing technical assistance to develop and pilot Workplace Solutions—a national computer-based telecommunications technical assistance service and network and Web site, www.WorkplaceSolutions.org. The Web site offers free resources (e.g. assessment tools, publications, and videos) and services (e.g., referrals to expert technical assistance providers and resource people) to assist employers and unions to increase the access to and success of women in nontraditional apprenticeships, training programs and occupations. WOW is also developing an information resource clearinghouse to assist employers and unions in their preparation to increase the participation of women in apprenticeship and nontraditional occupations in their workplaces/job sites.

The project activities have been completed.

WANTO 4th Year Grant—Awarded September 1997
Work4Women

Building upon the work of the FY 1996 Workplace Solutions project, Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW) has been developing the online project Work4Women to serve women, girls and workforce development professionals. The Work4Women Web site (www.Work4Women.org) will provide tools, strategies and a virtual community to help increase the integration and retention of women and girls in high-wage jobs that are considered nontraditional for women.

Scheduled completion date: January 31, 2000.

WANTO 5th Year Grant—Serving as Partner to The Urban Family Institute
Jobs Connection 2000

Wider Opportunities for Women is serving as a partner on the Urban Family Institute's WANTO project, Jobs Connections 2000. WOW will provide technical assistance to help develop systems for employers and unions successfully recruit, train and retain women in telecommunications and information technology jobs. WOW will also develop computer-based tools, including a Web site, to disseminate information to employers and unions and network women participating in the project.

WANTO 6th Year Grant—Serving as Partner to Centro del Obrero Fronterizo for La Mujer Obrera
Jobs Connection 2000

Wider Opportunities for Women will support the work of La Mujer Obrera and the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to provide technical assistance to 10 employers and labor unions in the construction industry. The partnership will develop a methodology to support/change management and employee attitudes toward the promotion of female workers in apprenticeship and other nontraditional jobs; promote systemic changes in participating employers' recruitment, hiring, training and of women in apprenticeship.
