WANTO 1st Year Grant—Awarded September 1994

The YWCA of Greater Memphis’ “Women in Trades Project” provided technical assistance to employers and labor unions by conducting and evaluating twenty (20) one-day workshops around the Mid - South for employers and labor unions to provide introduces and provide orientation to them on expanding the employment and training of women in apprenticeship and nontraditional occupations. The workshop follow-up with employers and unions provided on-site technical assistance to develop workplace-specific strategies to expand the employment of women in apprentice and nontraditional occupation in their workplaces.

Technical Assistance
The YWCA provided direct TA to 13 employers and two unions.

  1. Manual—Preventing Sexual Harassment in Non-Traditional Occupations: A Training Manual for Tradeswomen, Advocates, Unions and Employers, materials on equitable work sites; fair training assignments; managing diversity on the workaday
  2. Training for the 21st Century: A Non-Traditional Approach and a Regional Resource Guide (Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi);
  3. Examples of employer-technical assistance packets (Memphis, Light, and Water and Marathon Electrical Contractors, Inc.)
  4. A final report that includes an information database and technical assistance profiles (evaluation) of the employers and unions who received TA.


WANTO 3rd Year Grant—Awarded September 1996

The YWCA of Greater Memphis of Greater Memphis will provide technical assistance through:
  • Sixteen training sessions for (at least) 200 employers and unions in the southeast area: Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee;
  • Twenty hours of on-site follow-up with individual employers and unions;
  • A Resource Directory for the Southeast employers and unions; and
  • The development of a Southeast Tradeswomen Network in at least four States.

The grant has been extended to December 1998.
