Employer: The Mortenson Construction Company
Union: International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE)

The Mortenson Construction Company

You, Too, Can Implement These Strategies!

International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE)

The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) has over 250,000 members who operate cranes, bulldozers, and other types of heavy equipment. The IUOE developed recruitment materials that feature women in nontraditional occupations, including the following two films:
  • Simply the Best
The IUOE's general recruitment film which features both men and women.

  • At The Controls
The IUOE's recruitment film specifically designed to interest women in nontraditional jobs.
This lively film provides a strong statement of support by the international union president and shows women doing many different kinds of work. It features women such as Alice Ronne who is Assistant Training Director for Local 15 in New York and a journey-level heavy equipment operator. This film can be used for recruitment in areas where the IUOE does not have any women to speak to new female recruits.

After several years of effort, the IUOE apprenticeship
program is now 19 percent women!
